How to Create an Animated Gif of Eadweard Muybridge's Photographs of Animals and People in Motion

A Horse in Motion by Eadweard Muybridge

In this tutorial you'll learn how to use Photoshop to make an animated gif of Muybridge's The Horse in Motion, 1878.

A Horse (truly) in Motion

Here's how:
  1. Download the image from Wikipedia. (Don't worry... it's free, and in the Public Domain).
  2. Use the Crop tool in Photoshop to remove the text from the bottom of the image.
  3. Use the Slice tool in Photoshop to split the image into twelve uniformly-sized frames.
  4. Use the "Save for Web" option in Photoshop to automatically save each frame as a separate file.
  5. Use the "Load Files into Stack" script in Photoshop to automatically load each frame into a separate layer.
  6. Use the Animation window in Photoshop to successively turn the visibility of each layer on, then off.
  7. Save and optimize your new animated gif of a Horse (truly) in Motion!
